ASHLAND, VA — Wells Holbrook (Knoxville,
TN/Knox West) secured 35 points for Goucher by finishing
in the top three in three individual events, helping the Gophers
capture third place in the team standings at the Yellow Jacket
Invitational.
Holbrook picked up 12 points for each of his third-place
performances, which came in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard
backstroke. The senior completed the 200 free in 1:58.78 and the
200 back in 2:15.31.
The remaining 11 points he produced were the result of his
fourth-place finish in the 100 back (1:01.97).
By earning 35 points, Holbrook finished in a tie for 10th place
among the top point-producing individuals at the two-day event,
which concluded today.Sasha Verin (Ellicott City, MD/Mt.
Hebron) and Mac McDonald (New Port Richey, FL/Avon
Old Farms) supplied the Gophers with 23 and 21 points,
respectively, in individual events. Verin placed fourth in the 200
individual medley (2:14.46), seventh in the 100 butterfly (:59.69)
and eighth in the 100 free (:54.25); McDonald was fifth in the 50
free (:24.05), seventh in the 500 free (5:38.74) and ninth in the
100 free (:54.44).
Goucher's top finish in a relay was third place in the 200
freestyle. The foursome of Michael Polonchak (Harpers
Ferry, WV/home school), Derek Ford (Syracuse,
NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), McDonald and Verin completed the
event in 1:39.38.
In placing third as a team with 213 points, the Gophers finished
behind only Virignia Military (562 points) and Catholic
(554).
