Sophomore Places First in Two Additional Freestyle Events
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Goucher's Georgi Shalamanov
(Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) broke the
school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle today during a triangular
meet in which the Gophers picked up their first win of the
season.
Goucher's opponents in the meet were a pair of teams from the Capital Athletic Conference. The Gophers (1-3) were victorious over Gallaudet, 131-54, but were handed a 114-83 setback by St. Mary's (Md.).
Shalamanov was the runner-up to Billy DeBoissiere of the Seahawks in the 1000 free, but his time of 10:24.02 lowered the school record in the event by nearly three full seconds. The former standard of 10:26.84 was established back in 1997 by Logan Smith.
In addition to his second-place performance in the 1000 free, Shalamanov touched first in two individual events: the 200 free (1:52.46) and 500 Free (5:07.25).
Goucher also produced the top performer in two other individual events: Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) in the 50 free and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) in the 100 free. Rooney's winning time in the 50 free was :22.85, which makes him only the eighth male in the history of the school's swimming program to complete the event in under :23.00; Williams beat out Aaron Page from St. Mary's in the 100 by 33-hundredths of a second with his time of :51.72.
Rooney was also the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (:56.85) and Williams placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:12.87) and 100 backstroke (:58.53).
In the 200-yard medley relay, Goucher's entry which included Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston), Michael Ambrosio (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber), Kevin Wons (Bedford, N.H./Souhegan) and Devin Myles (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) placed first with a time of 1:53.17.
