YORK, Pa. — A school record that stood since the Goucher
men's swimming program's seventh year of existence was broken this
evening while the Gophers were competing against York and
Salisbury.
The Spartans and Sea Gulls both recorded victories over head coach Tom Till's Gophers (2-6): York defeated Goucher, 141-61, and Salisbury prevailed 125-77.
The new record was set in the first event of the triangular meet as Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton), Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) took first place in the 200-yard medley relay. The winning time of 1:40.40 eclipsed the former standard of 1:41.02 that was established at the 1994 Capital Athletic Conference Championships.
Shalamanov also placed first in a pair of individual events by completing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.90 and the 500 free in 5:03.10. Williams turned in a time of :56.58 in the 100 backstroke, good for first place in that event.
Rooney was the runner-up in the 50 free (:22.67) and 100 butterfly (:56.62).
