Gophers Suffer 173-81 Setback to Cardinals, Slip to 0-2
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke and swam the second leg on Goucher's victorious entry in the 400-yard medley relay in today's Landmark Conference meet against Catholic.
Shalamanov Turns In Only Individual First-Place Performance
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke and swam the second leg on Goucher's victorious entry in the 400-yard medley relay in today's Landmark Conference meet against Catholic.
The Cardinals defeated the Gophers, 173-81.
By winning the 400 medley relay, the Gophers held an 11-4 lead after one event, but the Cardinals (2-0, 1-0 Landmark) went ahead for good on the strength of a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the meet's second event.
Shalamanov produced Goucher's only first-place performance in an individual event. His winning time in the 200 breast was 2:23.74, giving him a nearly 16-second victory over Catholic's Evan Hundley.
Shalamanov also placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:04.92) and third in the 200 butterfly (2:16.63). Joining him in the 400 medley relay were Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley).
Williams and Leonard were both runners-up in a pair of individual events: Williams in the 100 back (:55.63) and 200 back (2:02.73); Leonard in the 50 free (:22.94) and 100 butterfly (:57.02). Kevin Wons (Bedford, N.H./Souhegan) took second place in the 200 free (1:57.95).
The Gophers (0-2, 0-2 Landmark) closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. Goucher's entry included Leonard, Wons, McFadden and Williams.
