Gophers Split with Rangers, Mariners to Finish 3-7
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Goucher's entry of Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) was victorious in the 400-yard medley relay, the opening event in a Landmark Conference double dual that took place this afternoon.
Entry in 400 Medley Relay Provides Winning Start for Goucher
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Goucher's entry of Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) was victorious in the 400-yard medley relay, the opening event in a Landmark Conference double dual that took place this afternoon.
The Gophers came away with a split today as they defeated Drew, 60-34, but fell to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 64-42, to wrap up the regular season with a 3-7 record (1-4 Landmark). The Mariners (9-0, 4-0 Landmark) downed the Rangers (2-4, 0-3 Landmark), 66-35.
Today's meet was the fourth during the 2011-12 season for head coach Thomas Till's squad that began with the 400 medley relay and this was the fourth time that a foursome from Goucher finished in first place in that event. This afternoon's winning time was 3:53.33.
Goucher also took first place in the final event of today's meet as Williams, Nicko March (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), Daniel Montoya (Chihuahua, Mexico/ITESM Campus Chihuahua) and McFadden recorded a time of 3:30.04 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Brower produced Goucher's only first-place performance in an individual event as he completed the 100 backstroke in :56.27, giving him an 8-hundredths-of-a-second victory over John Fields from Merchant Marine.
Brower also placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.27). There were three other events in which a Goucher swimmer was the runner-up: Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) in the 1000 free (11:27.33), Leonard in the 100 butterfly (:58.13) and Montoya in the 100 free (:52.51).
