Brower Makes Top 10 List in 100 Back, 200 Back

Three First-Place Performances for Shalamanov

TOWSON, Md. — Freshman Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) ruled the two backstroke events and also swam the opening leg on Goucher's entry that set a new pool record while winning the 200-yard medley relay, but the Gophers still couldn't come up with their first win of the 2011-12 season today. Instead, head coach Thomas Till's squad bowed to Scranton, 158-100, in a Landmark Conference meet.

Brower took first place and teammate Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) was the runner-up in both the 100 back and 200 back. Only two individuals in the history of Goucher's men's swimming program have turned in faster times in the 200 back than the 2:02.51 that Brower registered today, and his winning time of :56.36 in the 100 back makes him the fourth-fastest individual in that event in program history.

Williams, who holds the school records in both events, completed the 100 back in :57.29 and the 200 in 2:06.51.

In the 200 medley relay, Brower was followed in order by Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Williams and the quartet's combined time of 1:39.46 shaved more than 4.7 seconds off the former pool record of 1:44.20 established by four Washington (Md.) swimmers on Jan. 18, 2005.

Shalamanov also had an outstanding meet for the Gophers (0-4, 0-3 Landmark Conference). He placed first in three individual events with his times of 1:01.31 in the 100 breaststroke, 2:17.23 in the 200 breast and 2:04.70 in the 200 individual medley.

Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:14.10).

Goucher enjoyed an 11-6 lead at the conclusion of the 200 medley relay, but the Royals (4-1, 1-0 Landmark) went ahead to stay by outscoring the Gophers, 14-4, in the 1000 free.
