CHESTERFIELD, Va. — Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) continued his assault on the men's swimming program record book this weekend, breaking his second school mark of the season in the 1650-yard freestyle at the Yellow Jacket Invitational as Goucher registered an eighth place finish at the 11-team meet.
Morgan's time of 17:09.88 was nearly 28 seconds faster than Danny Carroll's previous school best of 17:37.14 which was set last February at the Landmark championships. He had previously set a new program record in the 1000 free earlier this season at St. Mary's (Md.). His time of 53.47 in the 100 butterfly, meanwhile, earned him a third place finish which was the highest for the Gophers out of the 18 contested men's events.
Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) and Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) also recorded top-five finishes. Davis touched in at 22.36 in the 50 free to finish fifth out of 59 swimmers, while Colin's time of 2:02.07 placed him fifth out of 34 in the 200 individual medley. As a team, Goucher earned points in 16 of 18 events, picking up a total of 206 points.
Three of the Gophers' relay teams recorded top eight finishes. Goucher's 400 medley relay team of Colin Richter, Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont), Morgan Richter and Davis (3:42.36) swam to a seventh place finish, and the same foursome placed eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:42.13). The Richter's, Davis and Jared Herrmann (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) teamed up for an eighth place result in the 400 free relay (3:21.08) to conclude the invitational.
Nelson earned points in three individual events, the 200 IM (15th), the 100 breaststroke (12th) and the 200 breast (13th). Grant Gerber (Portland, Maine/Casco Bay) picked up a point with a 16th place showing in the 100 breast, while Ben Shriner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) grabbed two points with a 15th place result in the 1650 free.
Morgan's school record in the 1650 free placed him eighth in the event. He also finished eighth in the 200 fly. Colin earned extra points for the Gophers in the 400 IM (ninth) and 200 backstroke (10th).
Goucher now has an extended break before returning to the pool on Jan. 11 for a home tri-meet against Drew and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The meet begins at 1 p.m. from the von Borries Aquatic Center.
