RICHMOND, Va. — Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) bettered one of his own school records and broke another one co-held by two former Goucher swimmers while competing for the Gophers at the Yellow Jacket Invitational this weekend.
Davis completed the 50-yard freestyle on Friday in :21.58, good for third place, but it was in the 200-yard free relay when he was clocked at :21.57 for his portion of the race that he lowered the 50 free school record of :21.63 he established at the 2014 Landmark Conference Championships.
The senior added a third-place finish in the 100 free today, breaking a record that was originally set by Jon Claus in 2005 and equaled by Georgi Shalamanov five years later with his time of :47.55.
Two more school records went down this weekend: Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) trimmed more than eight seconds off of the record he set two years ago in the 1650 free with his time of 17:01.27, and Goucher's entry of Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge), Morgan Richter and Davis posted the fastest time in school history (3:13.86) when it took fourth place in the 400 free relay.
Colin Richter was the runner-up in the 200 individual medley, finishing 2.06 seconds behind Randolph-Macon's Bobby Brajdic, who recorded a winning time of 1:54.39. He also placed fourth in the 400 IM (4:18.37) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.60).
Morgan Richter also turned in a second-place performance, doing it in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:57.88 left him less than 1.5 seconds behind the winner, Noah Schammel from Washington & Lee. He also finished in a tie for fourth place in the 500 free (4:52.21) and alone in fifth place in the 100 butterfly (:53.49).
Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) touched right after Colin Richter in the 100 breast, placing seventh with his time of 1:01.63. He also took seventh place in the 200 breast (2:17.72).
Goucher entries claimed fourth place in the 200 free (1:28.36), the 200 medley (1:37.62) and the 400 medley (3:38.75) relays.
In the final team scoring, the Gophers were sixth with a total of 312.5 points. They finished ahead of St. Mary's (Md.), 293, Davis & Elkins, 172.5, and Hampden-Sydney, 18.
