BOYDS, Md. — The Landmark Conference accolades continue to add up for Goucher's Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne).
On the busiest of the three days of competition at the 2015 conference championships, Richter earned his fifth career Landmark title and second of the weekend with a school and meet-record breaking performance in the 100-yard butterfly.
The junior defended his crown in the event with a time of 50.25 in the finals this evening, finishing six-tenths of a second ahead of second-place William Kelsik from Merchant Marine. The previous record had been held by Mariner standout Kevin Lindgren, who posted a 50.63 in the 2013 finals.
Richter's crown accounted for 20 of the Gophers' 105.5 points earned tonight. One other Goucher swimmer, Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont), earned a top eight individual finish. Nelson placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.79. Earlier in the afternoon, he broke one minute in the event for the first time in his career at 59.56. Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) also competed in the 100 breast, placing 15th after touching in at 1:02.87 in the consolation finals.
Four other Gophers earned points in individual events. Three of the four joined Richter in the 100 fly. Competing in the consolation finals of the event, Jerel McCord (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) finished tied for 11th (54.21), Dalton Delp (Summerville, S.C./Ashley Ridge) placed 15th (56.42) and Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) followed in 16th (56.49). Patrick Tribbett (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman) earned an additional two points in the 100 back for his 14th place showing (58.65).
Goucher started the evening off with a bang, setting a new school record with its runner-up performance in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), Nelson, Morgan Richter and Davis touched in at 1:34.26, two seconds faster than the previous record from back in 2011.
The Gophers earned an additional 26 points in the final event of the evening, the 800 free relay. Nelson, McCord, Ian Furst (North Reading, Mass./Homeschooled) and Ben Shriner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) swam to a sixth place finish with a time of 7:31.25.
Goucher now sits in sixth place in the team standings with 225.5 points. Marywood has moved up to fifth with 258 team points. The Gophers will look to move up during the 12 finals contested on the final day of competition.
