Richter Finishes As Runner-Up in 100 Breast

The Gophers went into today's final two sessions in ninth place with a team score of 35 points. Even though they earned 129.5 points today for a final total of 164.5, they were unable to catch any of the team ahead of them and remained in ninth place.
Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) secured 17 points all by himself for being the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was clocked at :59.88, which left him 1.26 seconds behind Robert Redenz from Randolph-Macon (:58.62) at the finish line.
Richter also placed fifth overall in the 100-yard freestyle (:48.15) and seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.60).
Ben Shriner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) took sixth place and claimed 13 points for Goucher when he completed the 1650 free in 17:05.77.
Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) and Jerel McCord (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) picked up points in two individual events today. For Nelson, it was 11 points for placing seventh in the 100 breast (1:01.45) and another seven in the 200 breast (2:19.05), where he came in 10th; McCord finished in a tie for 12th place in the 100 butterfly (:54.29) and in 16th place in the 200 fly (2:02.92), adding 5.5 points to the Gophers' total.
Goucher came away with six more points in the 100 fly thanks to the 11th-place performance in the event by Blake Rhodes (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West), who posted a time of :54.03.
The top finish by any of Goucher's entries in any of the relay events contested today was seventh place (24 points) by the quartet of Richter, Nelson, Rhodes and Andrew Coon (Cumberland, Maine/Greely). The combined time of the four swimmers in that event was 1:39.92.
The Gophers came away with 10 points for taking 12th place in the 400 free relay and another 10 points for taking 14th and 15th place in the 800 free relay.
Goucher doesn't compete again until after its annual training trip in Puerto Rico in January.
