Richter Breaks 1000 Free Record in 2015-16 Debut

SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher's Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) certainly made his presence known during today's meet against Marywood. The senior, competing for the first time in 2015-16, took first place in three individual events and also broke the school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Richter's performance, however, wasn't enough to lead the Gophers to a victory. Instead, the Pacers defeated head coach Thomas Till's squad, 154-108.

The first event Richter, who missed the first five competitions on Goucher's 2015-16 schedule while studing abroad during the fall semester, took part in this afternoon was the 1,000 free. He was clocked at 10:06.13, giving him a more than 28-second victory over the runnerup, Jason Beabout from Marywood (10:34.70), and breaking the school record of 10:07.57 he established as a sophomore on Nov. 2, 2013.

The next time he entered the pool, he earned nine points for the Gophers (2-6) with a first-place effort in the 200 butterfly. He completed the event in 1:58.66.

Richter (4:55.55) touched more than 11 seconds ahead of Beabout to finish first in the 500 free.

Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) were both the top performers in a pair of events for Goucher. Colin Richter's two first-place finishes were in the 50 (:25.91) and 200 (2:04.31) backstrokes; Nelson's were in the 50 (:30.36) and 200 (2:27.42) breaststrokes.

Jerel McCord (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) was the runnerup in the 50 butterfly (:25.82).

Entries from Goucher took second place in both relays, earning a total of eight points combined. In the meetiending 200 free relay, the quartet of Andrew Coon (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), Blake Rhodes (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) and two Richter brothers posted a time of 1:30.86 to finish less than four seconds behind the first-place entry for the Pacers (5-3).

The Gophers will take on Susquehanna in the final 2015-16 home meet one week from today, beginning at 2 p.m.
