Richter Produces Time of :49.48 in 100 Fly at NCAAs

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Texas) was clocked at :49.48 this morning in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, being conducted at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The senior, who will compete Friday in the 200-yard butterfly, placed 22nd overall in today's event.

The fastest time by any of the 47 entrants in the 100 butterfly was :47.30 by Reed Dalton from Washington (Mo.). It took a time of :48.72 or under to advance to the championship finals. The next eight swimmers, all of whom finished in :49.13 or under, will compete in the consolation finals.

Richter did set a new Landmark Conference record with his time in the preliminaries, breaking the former standard of :49.52 established by Kevin Lindgren from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. It is also the all-time fastest 100 butterfly time in the history of Goucher's men's swimming program.

"It's his best time ever in the event, so you can't be disappointed (by his performance)," Goucher head coach Thomas Till commented following the preliminaries. "He comes back tomorrow in the 200 butterfly, which is his best event and the one in which he qualified for nationals. We can look at today's race as a nice warm-up for the one tomorrow. That he bettered his time from the conference meet in the 100 is a good sign."
