Goucher Adds Another All-American to All-Time List

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Goucher's Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) earned Division III All-America distinction this evening with his eighth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, which are being conducted at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.

Richter completed the event in 1:50.59. He covered the opening 50 yards in 25.43 seconds and remained in eighth place the entire race, although his time of :28.37 for the final length allowed him to gain on Jon Zimdars from Kenyon, who placed seventh overall. Richter trailed Zimdars by 59-hundredths of a second after 150 yards, but picked up :00.43 on him over the final 50 yards.

This year's Division III national champion in the 200 butterfly is Douglas Kogut from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Only a sophomore, Kogut's winning time was 1:47.28. The runner-up was Jeff Anderson from Amherst (1:47.60).

Richter claimed his spot in the championship finals by registering the eighth-fastest time of the event's 31 entrants during morning preliminaries. The senior was clocked at 1:49.12 in the prelims, which is both the all-time fastest 200 butterfly time in the history of Goucher's men's swimming program and also a new Landmark Conference record. The former conference standard of 1:49.39 was established by Frank Vita from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Richter, a four-time Landmark champion in the 200 butterfly, qualified for the NCAAs with his time of 1:49.74 at the conference meet back in February.
