Penner, Freeburg And Shannon Each Win An Event At Tri-Meet With Elizabethtown And Immaculata
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Jackson Penner (Newille, Pa./Big Spring) won two more events while Ryan Freeburg (Middletown, Del./Middletown) and Kathryn Shannon (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Louisville) also won an event in a tri-meet with Elizabethtown College and Immaculata University on Saturday.
Penner, who became the first Gopher men's swimmer to be named the Landmark Conference Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week since 2015 after winning three events last week at Marymount University, bettered his winning time in the 50 free with a time of 23.43 and also won the 100 free for the second-straight week with a time of 52.84. The sophomore also swam the anchor leg of the 200-free relay (1:43.95).
Freeburg won the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.61 and also finished second in the 200 IM (2:13.36) and swam the third leg of the second place 200-medley relay (1:55.70).
Shannon won the 1000 free for the second-straight week with a time of 11:11.54 and was a member of the second-place 200-medley relay (2:05.39) and 200-free relay (1:52.32).
Also on the men's side, Jacy MacConvery (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) finished second in the 100 fly (59.31). Connor Lawrence (North Potomac, Md./Wootton), Victor Garcia-Lara and Richard Bialik (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) swam the first three legs of the 200-free relay before Penner took over while Garcia-Lara (Millersville, Md.), Marcus Montisano (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), Freeburg and Lawrence made up the 200-medley relay.
For the women, Camilla Civiello (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) finished second in the 200 free (2:12.74) and third in the 100 free (1:00.86) while Hallie Stewart (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) placed second in the 500 free (28.61) and third in the 50 free (28.61).
Alejandra Berry-Ruiz (New Haven, Conn./Amity) (100 fly, 1:06.38), Kelci Wood (Spencer, Ind./Owen Valley) (100 free, 1:00.45) and Jamie Damm (Middletown, Md./Middletown) (100 back, 1:11.43) each recorded a second-place standing on the afternoon.
After Shannon opened the 200-medley relay, Wood, Berry-Ruiz and Civello swam the final three legs while Wood, Samantha Kaminsky (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain), Meghan Lindsey (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic College Prep) took the first three legs of the 200-free relay before Shannon brought it home.
For the second-straight week, Goucher lost to the host institution and defeated the neutral site opponent. The Gopher men defeated Immaculata 108-62, but fell 132-62 to Elizabethtown while the women downed Immaculata 135-53 and lost 126-75 to Elizabethtown.
Goucher returns to the pool on Saturday in a Landmark Conference tri-meet at the University of Scranton with Juniata College. First splash is 1 p.m.
