Penner And Stewart Fuel Goucher Swimming At Drew In Final Tuneup For Landmark Conference Championships
MADISON, N.J. – Jackson Penner (Newille, Pa./Big Spring) recorded two second-place standings and a third while Hallie Stewart (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) finished with a pair of third-place finishes to pace Goucher College against Drew University in Landmark Conference swimming action on Saturday.
Penner opened the meet by swimming the opening leg of the second-place 200-medley relay with a time of 1:49.44 and was followed by Marcus Montisano (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), Jacy MacConvery (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) and Ryan Freeburg (Middletown, Del./Middletown). The sophomore then placed second in the 100 back with a time of 1:04.00 and then ended his day by finishing third in the 50 free with a time of 23.39.
Stewart spent a lot of time and laps in the pool for her two third-place finishes. She swam the 1000 free in a time of 12:36.24 and then the 500 free with a time of 6:07.90.
Also on the men's side, Montisano was third in the 100 breast (1:09.45) while Freeburg raced the 200 IM as an exhibition and would have placed second (2:10.33) while he also finished third in the 1000 free (12:11.05) and swam the anchor leg of the 200-free relay (1:47.79) that was started by Richard Bialik (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown), Kyle Conway (Sonoma, Calif./Credo) and Victor Garcia-Lara (Millersville, Md.).
Bialik (200 free, 2:02.19), MacConvery (100 breast, 1:10:36) and Sean Swanson (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) (100 back, 1:25.37) each registered a third-place finish against the Rangers.
Along with Stewart's two third-place standings for the women, Camilla Civiello (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) swam the anchor of the 200-medley relay (2:06.31) that finish third and then wrapped up her final regular season competition by opening the third-place 200-free relay (1:52.99). Kathryn Shannon (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Marin Catholic College Prep), Kelci Wood (Spencer, Ind./Owen Valley) and Alejandra Berry-Ruiz (New Haven, Conn./Amity) opened the 200-medley relay while Caitlin Cunningham (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Samantha Kaminsky (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and Berry-Ruiz swam the final three legs of the 200-free relay.
Kaminisky (200 free, 2:12.07), Cunningham (100 back, 1:15.04), Wood (100 free, 1:00.29) and Jamie Damm (Middletown, Md./Middletown) (50 free, 28.01) each posted a third-place finish on the day.
Drew defeated the Gopher men 149-43 and the Gopher women 153-38.
Garcia-Lara, MacConvery, Civiello, Maddie Chism (Erie, Colo./Centarus), Sara Jordan (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney) and Megan Wells (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham and Monson Academy) were honored on January 17 against Susquehanna University and competed in their final regular season meet on Saturday against Drew.
Goucher will now take the next two weeks to prepare for the Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on February 14-16.
