TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's five starters outscored their counterparts from the Apprentice School by 19 points, but the Builders were the recipients of 46 points from their bench as they defeated the Gophers, 69-59, this evening in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
The first points either team picked up from a non-starter were off of a medium-range jumper by Courtney Collins that put the Builders (6-0) up 6-0 after 4:44. The Gophers (0-4) responded with a run of six consecutive points, knotting up the score at 10-10 on a basket by Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco), but Apprentice went ahead to stay when its very next possession concluded with a layup by Tyisha Battle.
Goucher's deficit reached double figures for the first time on a layup by Tamara Davis that provided the undefeated Builders with a 26-16 lead with 3:01 remaining before halftime. Apprentice took a 33-22 advantage into the locker room at the break.
The Builders assumed their biggest lead of the contest on a basket by Collins that made the score 54-32 with 12:28 left to play. The Gophers were able to get as close as 68-59 on the second of the two 3-point field goals Amy Smith (Logan Twp., N.J./Paulsboro) knocked down in the final 1:30.
Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), who registered her fourth double-digit scoring performance in as many games this season, shared scoring honors for Goucher with Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie), who delivered 12 points off the bench. Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) supplied the Gophers with 11 points and the two 3-pointers at the end boosted Smith's final tally to 10 points.
For the first time in 2010-11, the Gophers shot better than 40 percent from the field. They made 25 of the 54 shots they attempted for a .463 shooting percentage.
Collins, who turned in a 10-for-14 shooting performance, contributed 22 points to the victory. The only other double-figure scorer for Apprentice was reserve Danita Whitaker, who finished with 12 points.
