Shorewomen Seize Momentun, Finish Off Gophers

No Double-Figure Scorers for Goucher in 63-48 Setback

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — It appeared as though momentum might be on Goucher's side when the Gophers tallied the final six points of the first half in the Cain Athletic Center this afternoon to reduce their deficit against Washington (Md.) from 10 points down to 33-29. But then the Shorewomen opened the second period with a 20-4 run and were on their way to a decisive 63-48 victory.

Neither team led by more than three points until a layup by Erin Fitzgerald provided Washington with an 18-13 advantage midway through the first half. The Shorewomen (3-4) went up by double digits for the first time on a 3-point field goal by Kelly Mitchell with 1:26 remaining before halftime, which was enough time for the Gophers (1-7) to narrow the gap to four points using a conventional three-point play by Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) and a 3-point basket by Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie).

Over the first 9:03 of the second half, Goucher was 1-for-11 from the field and 2-of-6 at the free-throw line, plus the Gophers committed five turnovers, allowing the home team to expand its lead to 53-33 on another 3-pointer by Mitchell with 12:09 left to play. The closest the Gophers could get the rest of the way was 62-48 on a made 3-pointer by Jeannie Goodell (Alexandria, Va./The Peddie School) with 2:02 remaining.

Goucher, which finished with a .286 shooting percentage, didn't have a double-digit scorer as Huff, Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) and Shante Atkinson (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) furnished the Gophers with nine points apiece. Doughty led the team in rebounds with 10.

For Washington, Mitchell contributed 20 points to the victory and Fitzgerald registered a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
