TOWSON, Md. - After forty minutes of regulation play, the Gophers were handed a heartbreaking 5-point loss against the Hood College Blazers on Tuesday night.
Goucher played a strong game throughout, but after a rough start to the second half, they couldn't recover.
Ultimately, it was two freshmen that led the Gophers in their first contest of the 2018-19 season. Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla.) racked up 24 points, including one three-pointer and eight field goals. Williams also led the team in assists, totaling three. Alayna McFadden also turned in an impressive performance in her first collegiate game, putting up 19 points - two of which were 3-pointers. McFadden also played the full forty minutes of the game, the only Gopher to do that this time around.
Though the Gophers lost their season opener, it sets a promising tone for their remaining games. Goucher went 0-25 last season and average 33 points a game. Even in their first matchup, the Gophers smashed their average by thirty-six points.
The Gophers will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Swarthmore for the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic where they'll play at 5 PM.
