SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In the first of two games this weekend, the 2018-19 women's basketball team suffered a hard loss to the Swarthmore College Garnet, with a final score of 80-46.
After losing their season opener on Tuesday, head coach Andrea Preston was hoping to start this weekend tournament off with a win. Unfortunately, the Gophers weren't able to match the efforts of the Garnet, particularly after a rough third quarter, and suffered another disappointing loss.
It was freshman Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md.) that put the team on her back in today's contest, putting up 18 of Goucher's 46 points. McFadden sunk one 3-pointer, put in 5 field goals, and went 7-9 from the line. The next highest-scoring player in this matchup was freshman Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md.) with 8 points. Avery went 2-4 on three-point attempts and 3-8 on field goals.
Despite their rough start, the women's basketball team is still beating their averages in every category over last season. Currently, the Gophers are scoring 57.5 points per game with a 31.6% field goal average, a 26.9% three-point average, and a 60.4% free throw average.
The Gophers will be back in action on Saturday, November 16th at 1 PM as they take on Cabrini in Day 2 of the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic.
