Apostol Scores Career-High 27 Points In Loss To Moravian
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) scored a career-high 27 points for Goucher College in a Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Saturday. Moravian defeated the Gophers in the tilt.
Apostol shot 9-for-11 from the floor and 5 of 7 from behind the arc while making four freebies to finish with 27 points for her first career double-figure point game. The 27 points ties Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) for the most points scored in a single game this season. Williams had 27 points against Yeshiva on December 30. Apostol's previous career best was nine points twice this season.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The freshman has scored double figures 17 times this season and hauled in 10+ rebounds six times. She has scored 18 points or more seven times this season. McFadden is second on the team with 14.1 points per game and leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Nicole Wolard (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) was a basket away from her third-straight double-double, posting eight points and 13 rebounds on Saturday. The senior has six double-digit rebound games this season and 18 in her career. In her last three games, she is averaging 11.0 points and 14.3 rebounds per game in her last three tilts. She ranks third on the team with 10.2 points and is now tied with McFadden for the team lead in rebounds with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Moravian took a 17-12 lead into the second quarter, but Goucher used an 8-2 run to take a 20-19 lead with 7:16 left in the second frame. Apostol powered the spurt by scoring half of the points. The Greyhounds closed the stanza on a 22-9 run to take a 42-29 lead into the locker room.
Moravian took the third quarter by a score of 24-12. Despite the Gophers winning the fourth quarter by a 23-21 margin, the Greyhounds earned an 87-64 decision.
Goucher returns to the Decker Sports & Recreation Center to wrap up the 2018-19 season with two games. The final homestand begins with Catholic University of America on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
