Goucher Women's Basketball Falls At Hood
FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College defeated Goucher College in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) paced the Gophers with 23 points, five steals and four assists. The sophomore shot 9-for-14 from the floor 2 of 4 from behind the arc and 3 of 6 from the free throw line. Williams registered 20 points for the second time this season and the sixth time in her career. She has posted double figures in 20 of 24 games while she has tallied at least three assists and three steals nine times and four assists and five steals four times in her career.
Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) posted a season-high 13 points. The sophomore shot 4-for-7 from the floor, 3 of 4 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. It was her second career double-digit performance after she notched a career-high 27 points against Moravian on February 9, 2019.
With the score tied at 4, Hood went on an 11-2 run to grab a 15-6 lead with 3:29 on the clock in the first quarter.
Williams scored back-to-back baskets to cut the margin to 15-10 with three minutes left, but the Blazers closed the stanza on a 7-4 spurt to take a 22-14 lead after one quarter.
The Gophers scored the first seven points of the second quarter to cut the margin to 22-21 with 7:19 left in the half. Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) and Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) each had baskets while Williams drained a 3-ball in the surge.
Hood then closed the half on an 18-6 run to go into the locker room with a 40-28 lead.
After the Blazers extended its lead to 46-31 with 8:53 left in the third quarter, Goucher went on a 10-0 run to cut the margin to 46-41 midway through the stanza thanks to four-points apiece by Williams and McFadden.
Hood then closed the third quarter on a 12-4 spurt to go into the fourth quarter with a 58-45 lead.
The Blazers extended their margin in the fourth quarter and the Gophers cut it to 11 points, but could get no closer the rest of the way in a 73-56 loss.
McFadden chipped in nine points and nine rebounds on the night.
Goucher returns to action in one week at Notre Dame University of Maryland. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
