Goucher Women's Basketball Toppled By Salisbury
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College falls to Salisbury University in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday.
Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) and Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) paced the Gophers with 10 points each. It is the second time this season Apostol has posted double figures in points and the third time in her career after she registered a season-high 13 points against Hood on November 19.
Williams also added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. The sophomore has reached the midway point to 1,000 points and now has 507 points in her first 33 collegiate contests. Williams has posted double figures in points in 27 games in her career.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) posted seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. McFadden can join Williams in the 500 club with 18 points. The sophomore has hauled in 10+ rebounds four times this season and 10 times in her career.
Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) posted eight points and Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) hauled in seven rebounds. Avery has recorded at least eight points in four of the five games she has played this season while Quarles has grabbed seven boards in eight of the nine games she has played.
Salisbury jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter before a Goucher 14-10 second quarter cut the margin to 30-21 at the break. With the Sea Gulls leading 30-13 with 1:50 left, an 8-0 run to end the stanza by the Gophers made it a nine-point margin going into the locker room. Goucher went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 84 seconds of the half thanks to four charity tosses by Claire Flynn (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and two apiece from Avery and Williams.
Salisbury then used a 29-7 third quarter and a 17-13 fourth quarter to earn a 76-41 victory.
Goucher returns to action after the holiday and before the New Year at the Capital University Holiday Classic on December 28 against host Capital University. Tipoff is 7 p.m. The Gophers will spend the next month away from Baltimore during a five-game road trip before returning home to host Drew University on January 15.
