Goucher Women's Basketball Ends Non-Conference Play With Loss At Stevenson
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Goucher College closed out its non-conference slate and opened the New Year with a loss on the road at Stevenson University in women's basketball action on Monday night.
Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) finished the game with a season-high 13 points for her third 10-point performance this season and second on the road. The sophomore also had three assists and two steals She has scored at least eight points five times this season and has 11 career games with at least eight points and five 10-point games including a career-high 15 points against Catholic on February 13, 2019. Avery has eight career contests with at least three assists and matched her career best for the sixth time with six thefts.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) posted 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists on the night. The sophomore has scored double figures in four-straight games, 10 times this season and in 30 of 36 games in her career. Williams has hauled in at least seven caroms four times this season and on 12 occasions in her career. The 2018-19 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year will restart league play on Saturday after averaging 14.5 points per game in the circuit last year. She is averaging 15.3 points per game as a sophomore after ranking third in the conference in 2018-19 with 15.5 points per game.
Goucher jumped out to a quick lead after Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure), who finished the night with seven points, scored on a layup for a 2-0 lead with 8:25 left in the first and then Williams made a four-point game on a basket in the paint seconds later. After a Stevenson 3-ball, Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) scored the Gophers' third layup in the first three minutes for a 6-3 advantage. The Mustangs grabbed a 9-6 lead by scoring the next six points before Apostol drained a trey with 4:18 on the clock to tie the game at 9. Stevenson then scored nine of the final 13 points to take an 18-13 lead after one quarter.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Springs, Md./Montgomery Blair), who had five points, seven rebounds and two steals in her final non-conference game of the year, is averaging 14.6 points per game in her sophomore campaign. McFadden finished her freshman campaign ranking in the Top-10 in scoring in the league with 13.4 points per game including 11.6 points per game in the circuit.
The Gophers won four non-conference games in 2019-20 after winning five games last season.
Avery made it a 3-point game on a free throw to trim the margin to 21-18 with 6:44 left in the second quarter, but the Mustangs closed the half on a 20-10 run to go into the locker room with a 41-28 lead. The host then used a 23-8 third quarter and a 21-9 fourth quarter to earn an 85-45 victory in the first meeting between the two teams since January 4, 2006 when Stevenson was then called Villa Julie College.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday when the squad restarts Landmark Conference play at Susquehanna University on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
