Goucher Women's Basketball Upended By Susquehanna
SELINGROVE, Pa. – Goucher College trailed by one point at halftime and had Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) score 27 points in a 72-62 loss to Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.
Williams did most of her damage at the free throw line after going 13-for-15 from the charity stripe while also connecting on 7 of 11 from the floor for 27 points to post her second-most points in a single game in her career. The sophomore now has posted 27 points three times in her career along with a 29-point contest against Notre Dame (Md.) on November 26. It is the second time she has registered a 20-point game in conference play after notching exactly 20 points against the River Hawks last season on January 5. She stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-tying three blocks.
Williams, who needs 25 points for 600 career points, has four 20-point games this season and eight in her career. The 2018-19 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year has scored double figures in five-straight games, 11 out of 13 games this season and 33 of 37 contests in her career.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) tallied her fourth double-double of the season after recording 19 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. The 19 points are a career-high in a conference game for the sophomore and her eighth double-figure point game of the year and the 25th of her career. She has six 10+ rebound contests in each of her first two seasons and now has nine double-doubles in her career.
Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) posted her second-straight double-figure performance with 12 points after scoring a team-best 13 points against Stevenson on Monday. The sophomore notched consecutive 10+ games for the first time in her career and has all six of the double-figure point games in her last 15 tilts.
Susquehanna closed the first quarter on an 11-4 run to take an 18-11 lead going into the second quarter. Goucher came alive in the second frame by scoring 17 of the 28 points in the stanza to go into the locker room trailing 29-28 after tying the contest twice in the period.
Powered by six points by McFadden, the Gophers started the second frame on an 12-5 run to even the score at 23. The sophomore then gave Goucher its second lead of the game on a triple at 1:45 for a 26-24 edge. The River Hawks then posted five of the final seven points to go into the break with a one-point lead.
The Gophers stayed within four points for the first five minutes of the third quarter and had it a one-possession game three times before Susquehanna scored six-straight points to take a nine-point advantage at 44-35 with 2:20 on the clock and went into the fourth quarter with a 46-41 lead.
The River Hawks used a 26-21 fourth quarter to earn a 72-62 win.
Goucher returns to action at Elizabethtown College on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
