Quarles Has Dominant Performance In Defeat Against Catholic For Goucher Women's Basketball
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College drops a Landmark Conference women's basketball contest against Catholic University of America on Wednesday.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) paced the Gophers with 21 points and 13 rebounds. The freshman made eight shots from the floor and five free throws to notch her second career 20-point performance and first since she recorded a career-high 25 points against St. Mary's (Md.) on December 1. Both of her 20-point games have come at home while she has posted five of her eight double-figure point games in conference play. Quarles posted her fourth double-double of the season and fifth 10+ rebound contest while her 13 boards matched her career best for rebounds set against St. Mary's. She is averaging 11.8 points and 8.0 rebounds in seven league games.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added 14 points and nine rebounds. McFadden joined fellow sophomore Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) in the 600-point club and now has 602 career points in 43 games while McFadden is the 18th player in program history to reach the mark. She is averaging 16.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in her last three games while the sophomore has 12 double-digit point games In 2019-20 and 29 in her career.
Goucher won the second half of the game. The Cardinals outscored the Gophers 18-16 in the third quarter, but thanks to nine points by McFadden and seven from Quarles the host won the fourth frame by a score of 21-17 to register a 37-35 margin in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) added eight points, four assists and three rebounds. Williams, who had six points on the night, now has 632 points, 151 steals and 98 assists in 42 career tilts.
Catholic took control of the game with a 21-6 first quarter and a 21-11 second quarter to go into the locker room with a 42-17 lead en route to a 77-54 victory.
Goucher returns to action when they conclude a stretch of four of five games at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday against Susquehanna University. Game time is 4 p.m.
