Goucher Women's Basketball Ends Home Schedule With Loss To Moravian
BALTIMORE, Md. – On a day to celebrate National Girls and Women In Sports Day and Breast Cancer Awareness, Goucher College drops a Landmark Conference women's basketball game to Moravian College on Saturday.
Prior to the game, over 30 fourth to eighth grade girls participated in a Youth Play Day where Goucher women's basketball, field hockey, women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's tennis and women's lacrosse all put on 20 minute clinics. The day was also Breast Cancer Awareness with the hope to raise awareness and money for Red Devils Inc. Goucher wore United We Fight T-shirts while Moravian wore pink jerseys. Most of the girls from the clinic stayed for the game and participated in the $1 free throw promotion at halftime that saw $50 donated.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) paced Goucher in the game with 16 points and seven rebounds. The sophomore moved over 650 points and needs 14 boards in her final two games to notch 400 caroms in her first two seasons. McFadden registered her 14th game this season in double figures in points and 31st of her career. The seven boards marked the 16th time this season she has posted at least seven rebounds in a game.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) posted 13 points and eight rebounds. Quarles now has 11 games in double figures in points including eight out of 12 conference games. It was also the 14th time this season she has hauled in at least eight caroms. Quarles is averaging 9.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) added six assists, six rebounds and five points. The six assists ties a career best she established against Susquehanna on February 1 while it was the 10th time she has grabbed at least six boards this season. Williams, who has been held to single digits in points only nine times in her career, was held without a steal on Saturday for only the fourth time in her two years in Baltimore. The sophomore can still tie Renie Amoss (102, 1993-94) single-season program record with 15 thefts in her last two tilts.
The Greyhounds used a 17-9 first quarter and a 24-12 second quarter to take a 41-21 lead at the break and then outscored Goucher 20-8 in the third quarter while the Gophers won the fourth quarter 12-9, but Moravian came away with the 70-41 win.
The game ended the Gophers home schedule and will be on the road for the final two games of the year. Goucher returns to action on Wednesday at Catholic University of America in the nation's capital. Game time is 7 p.m.
