Goucher Women's Basketball Drops Season Finale At Scranton
SCRANTON, Pa. – Goucher College ends its season with a loss to the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) paced the Gophers with 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Williams posted double figures in 20 of the 25 games this season and 41 of the 49 games in her career. It was also her 10th game with at least 15 points in 2019-20 and 23rd in her two years in Baltimore. The sophomore registered 96 steals to finish six thefts behind Renie Amoss' (102, 1993-94) single-season program record. Williams posted career highs in points (378), assists (68) steals and blocks (15).
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added 13 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore reached double figures 16 times this season and has 33 double-digit performances in her career. She has also grabbed nine or more rebounds 13 times this season and 21 times in her two seasons with the Gophers. McFadden notched career highs in points (350), rebounds (202) and assists (30).
Williams has a good chance to reach the 1,000-point mark in her junior campaign after she finished her first two years at Goucher with 743 points. She will also have a chance to etch her name in the program's Top-7 for steals after posting 182 thefts through her sophomore year. McFadden could also join the 1,000-point club after she has posted 683 points in her first two campaigns. The sophomore also moved over 400 rebounds with her performance on Saturday. For the second-straight year the duo finished in the Top-10 in scoring in the league.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) completed her freshman campaign after tallying a point, seven rebounds and three steals against the Royals. The freshman registered 12 double-figure contests in her first year including two 20-point performances. She also had seen 10+ rebound games. She averaged 9.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
Scranton used a 12-6 first quarter and a 19-5 second quarter to take a 31-11 lead going into the locker room. Williams had nine points and McFadden had five points to help the Gophers outscore the Royals 14-10 in the third quarter, but Scranton closed the game with a 23-12 fourth quarter for a 64-37 win.
Kerry Chun (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute), who has missed the last 20 games due to an injury, officially concludes her career after tallying 244 points, 153 rebounds, 85 assists and 54 steals in 73 games including 58 starts.
Goucher finished the same amount of wins as last year while it had one more conference win in 2019-20. McFadden and Williams continue to lead the team with Quarles becoming a nice presence inside. The team continues to grow and the future continue to looks bright for Gophers women's basketball and will be a team that will be together for a couple years since the team wil not have any seniors in 2020-21.
The game also marked the final game for assistant coach Kayla Yost, who will graduate in May with her Master's Degree from Goucher College.
