Cavoli, Quarles Shine, Gophers Outlasted by Rangers

TOWSON, Md. - Junior Julia Cavoli (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) matched her career high with 13 points and senior Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) posted her fourth double-double in five games with 10 points and a career-best 20 rebounds, but visiting Drew University won its eighth straight game with a 64-55 win over Goucher College in Landmark Conference women's basketball Friday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Drew (12-1, 3-0 Landmark) scored the game's first five points, but three-pointers by Kyla Smith (Easton, Pa./Easton) and Cavoli for the Gophers (3-12, 0-4) made it 7-6 3:37 into the game.
- Goucher cut the lead to two two more times, and a Sydney Nwuli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) layup with 4:18 left made it 11-10.
- The Rangers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to hold a 19-10 lead through 10 minutes.
- Goucher opened the second with an 8-3 spurt and a Quarles free throw three minutes in cut the lead to four, 22-18.
- Drew extended the lead back to eight, 29-21, with 3:22 remaining on a Jamie Struble layup.
- A three by Smith with 1:25 on the clock made it a 31-26 game, and the Gophers went into intermission trailing by five.
- Drew outscored the Gophers 8-2 over the first three-plus minutes of the second half to open an 11-point cushion, 39-28.
- Down 41-31, Goucher reeled off nine straight points to cut the lead to one, 41-40, on an Alexis Kuhlman (Mount Airy, Md./Herndon) three with 2:06 to play.
- Kuhlman had six points in the run as she sank three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
- The Rangers carried a 43-40 lead into the final frame.
- The guests scored the first six points of the fourth to open up a 49-40 lead at the 7:43 mark.
- Drew took its largest lead, 53-41, with 5:28 remaining.
- A Cavoli three followed by a Quarles putback cut the lead to seven, 53-46, with 4:40 on the clock.
- Two Quarles free throws with just under a minute left shrunk the lead to six, 59-53, but Drew went 5-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.
- Cavoli matched her career high set last season by going 5-11 from the floor, including 3-7 behind the arc. She also had a pair of assists.
- 14 of Quarles' career-best 20 rebounds came on the offensive end. The leading offensive rebounder in Division III, Quarles had four double-doubles in the last five games, averaging 14.8 points and 13.8 rebounds per game over that span.
- Smith paced Goucher with 17 points while adding four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. She reached double figures in scoring for the 13th time in 14 games.
- Kendra Lawrence (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) matched her career high with 16 rebounds, adding four points.
- Kuhlman chipped in with six points, four assists and three rebounds.
- Goucher held a commanding 53-36 rebounding advantage, grabbing 26 offensive rebounds.
- The Gophers shot 7-20 behind the arc, 26.5% from the floor and were 12-16 at the free throw line.
- Drew shot 38% overall, was 4-13 from long range and went 16-25 at the charity stripe.
