Gophers Start 2-0 for First Time Since 2015-16

READING, Pa. - The Goucher College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures and forced 57 turnovers as it improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2015-16 with a 115-65 win at Penn State Berks Wednesday night.
- Goucher (2-0), which never trailed, used a 7-0 spurt capped by a Darby Sherman three to go up 21-8 with 3:19 left in the opening quarter.
- The Gophers led 24-10 over Penn State Berks (0-4) after one quarter.
- Back-to-back threes by Merci Turner and Briyah Haggins put the Gophers up 34-17 6:17 before intermission.
- Goucher continued to gradually pull away and a layup by Chi Igwe 40 seconds before halftime made it 46-25 at the break.
- The Gophers outscored the Nittany Lions 14-4 over the first 3:18 of the second half, with two Amira Whitaker free throws making it 60-29.
- A Whitaker layup with 32 seconds left made it 77-45, and Goucher carried a 77-47 lead into the final frame.
- An 8-2 spurt in the first 1:15 made it 85-47 with 8:45 to go.
- An Igwe basket with 3:40 left pushed the Gophers over the century mark for the second straight game and made it 101-61.
- Goucher outscored Penn State Berks 38-18 over the final 10 minutes
- Turner and Lauryn Towns paced the Gophers with 18 points apiece.
- Towns finished 8-11 from the floor and also grabbed six rebounds, while Turner was 6-11, including 5-8 from three.
- Igwe totaled 12 points and six rebounds in her season debut, while Whitaker also finished with 12 points and added five rebounds and five assists.
- Meona Boykin recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
- Sherman and Nia Edens each added nine points.
- Goucher reached the 100-point mark for the second time this season and fifth time in program history. The 115 points is tied for the second-most in school history.
- The Gophers held a 54-46 rebound advantage and forced 57 Penn State Berks turnovers, turning them into 63 points.
- Goucher shot 46.5% for the game and finished 11-33 behind the arc.
- Goucher's 2-0 start is its first since 2015-16 when the Gophers started 4-0.
- Goucher returns home Friday afternoon when it hosts Trinity Washington in the first round of the Renie Amoss '93 Tip-Off Classic.
- That game is slated for a 4 pm start at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
