Gophers Outrun Greyhounds for First-Ever Win Over Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Visiting Goucher College raced out to a 57-46 halftime lead en route to a 105-92 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory over Moravian University at Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.  The win marked the first-ever for the Gophers against the Greyhounds in 34 tries.

• Goucher (5-2, 1-2 Landmark) took a 10-6 lead midway through the first quarter on a Lauryn Towns basket.
• Moravian (1-5, 0-3) used a 7-0 spurt to go up 16-13 with just under three minutes to go.
• The Gophers countered with nine straight points of their own, with a Towns basket at the 1:23 mark putting the guests up 22-16.
• Goucher extended the lead to six, 28-22, on a Nia Edens three in the final seconds.

• Merci Turner's three 18 seconds in extended the Gopher lead to nine, 31-22.
• A 10-2 Goucher run capped by a Briyah Haggins basket gave the Gophers their largest lead, 46-28.
• Moravian whittled the Gopher lead down to seven, 51-44, with 3:03 to go on a conventional three-point play.
• Goucher scored six of the final eight points of the half to go into intermission up 11, 57-46.

• Moravian got the lead down to seven before a Darby Sherman three and a Chi Igwe basket made it 62-50 2:18 into the second half.
• An Igwe putback made it a 67-54 game with 5:48 on the clock.
• Goucher pushed the lead to 13 two more times before a late 6-0 Greyhound run made it 80-74 with 10 minutes to go.

• The hosts cut the lead to four three times in the first 2:14 of the final frame.
• An Igwe basket and a Brianna Johnson three put Goucher up nine, 89-80, with 6:09 remaining.
• Moravian cut the lead down to six two more times.
• A Savannah Holmes three with 2:40 left pushed the lead back to 12, 100-88.
• The Gophers maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way, sealing the win by going 5-5 at the free throw line in the final 1:09.

• Sherman and Edens paced Goucher with 17 points apiece.
• Edens finished 7-16 from the floor en route to her first career double-digit scoring performance.
• Sherman, a junior, finished with her career high in scoring as she went 5-7 behind the arc and 2-2 at the free throw line.
• Maiya Villanueva went 7-7 at the free throw line en route to 12 points while dishing out five assists.
• Turner drained three threes and finished with 11 points, while Amira Whitaker notched 10 points and five rebounds.
• Igwe added nine points, while Towns contributed eight points and seven boards.
• Goucher was 16-42 from three and shot 38% overall while going 21-28 at the free throw line.
• Moravian, which outrebounded the Gophers 55-42, shot 50.8% and 25-36 at the charity stripe, but Goucher forced 43 Greyhound turnovers, which it turned into 37 points.
• Goucher, which entered the game leading Division III in scoring offense (103.3 ppg), reached the 100-point mark for the fourth time this season and eighth time in program history.
• The Gophers entered the game 0-33 against Moravian all-time, including 0-30 since both schools became founding members of the Landmark Conference in 2007-08.
• Goucher's five wins are already its most since 2019-20.

• Goucher returns home Saturday, hosting third-ranked Scranton at 2 pm at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
