Goucher Breaks Nine Year Drought Against Drew

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College (12-5 Overall, 5-5 Landmark) secured a victory over the Drew University Rangers (9-7 Overall; 5-5 Landmark) for the first time since the 2015-2016 season.
- Goucher fell behind early after a four point stretch by Drew, capped by a made three by Nia Edens (8:39).
- The Rangers held the the Gophers scoreless for almost four minutes, to extend their lead to 12-4.
- Meona Boykin ended the scroing drought with a second chance shot with 3:52 remaining in the quarter.
- Chi Igwe added a pair of free throws to cut the Rangers lead.
- The Gophers scored the final points of the quarter with a made jumper by Sanai Knox to bring the score to 12-16, Drew leading.
- Drew began the scoring of the second, with a basket just 15 seconds into the quarter.
- A three pointer by Boykin off a steal, gave the Gophers their first lead of the game (5:34)
- The teams traded points and free throws for two minutes before Drew reclaimed and extended the lead.
- The Rangers went on a 10 point run to end the quarter 21-31.
- Maiya Villanueva scored the first points of the half, off a steal from Nia George (8:34).
- The Rangers responded with four points, capped by Amira Whitaker off a driving layup.
- Points by Knox, Whitaker, and Villanueva cut the Rangers lead to just three with 2:45 remaining in the quarter.
- Drew rallied back, answering with a 8-2 run with 13 seconds remaining.
- Villanueva added a three pointer to end the quarter, and bring the score 41-47.
- Knox and Whitaker began the scoring of the quarter to cut the Rangers lead, but a made three by Edens gave the Gophers the lead (7:45).
- Lauryn Towns added a pair to the score off a made basket from her own steal.
- The Rangers held the Gophers to a 5-0 run, to reclaim the lead.
- Villanueva brings Goucher within 1 after a made three with 2:45 on the clock.
- Merci Turner put Goucher back in the lead, but it was quickly answered bringing it to a tie game with 1:38 remaining.
- Whitaker ended the scoring of the game with a two, and the Gophers held the Rangers to sensre the win.
- Whitaker led the Gophers with 12 points on the night, she also collected five rebounds.
- Boykin led Goucher with seven rebounds, she also added eight points and a steal on the night.
- Villanueva also recoded a double digit performance, scoring 11.
- The Gophers outrebounded the Rangers 53-52, and added 24 points off the 25 rebounds they forced.
- The Rangers forced 21 turnovers and collected 15 points off of these. They shot 29.4% on the night, going 2-22 beyond the arc and 70% from the free throw line.
- Goucher shot 29.7% in the game, 7-22 from the three point line, and 7-14 from the charity stripe.
- The women remain home to face Moravian University on Wednesday, January 29th at 7pm in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
