Volleyball Drops Two on Second Day of VW Tournament
The Goucher College volleyball team (0-3, Landmark 0-0) dropped two matches on Saturday to St. Catherine University and Virginia Wesleyan.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Goucher College volleyball team (0-3, Landmark 0-0) dropped two matches on Saturday to St. Catherine University and Virginia Wesleyan.
St. Catherine
The Gophers squared off with the Wildcats during their first matchup of the day. Goucher came out of the gate on fire, taking home a win in the first set, 28-26. However, the Gophers could not hold on as they dropped the next three sets, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-10.
First-year Greta Coss (Bowie, Md.) led the team in the first match with 13 total kills and nine digs. She was followed by sophomore Sarah Weeden (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) with 10 kills and nine digs.
First-year Katie Hessenius (Aldie, Va.) led Goucher on defense with 14 digs and a service ace. The sophomore and first-year duo of Oliva Rhodes (St. Charles, Miss.) and Averie Miller (Chicago, Ill.) led Goucher with 19 and 11 assists, respectively.
St. Catherine was led by Libby Kreuser and Mackenzie Peper with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Virginia Wesleyan
The Gophers started quickly again in their second match of the day, taking the first set 25-20 over the Marlins. However, Virginia Wesleyan rebounded and took the next three sets, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-19.
Weeden had a 20 kills in the match, falling only seven short of her career-high at Goucher. Coss also attacked the net with urgency, collecting 11 kills over the four sets.
Hessenius, Coss and sophomore Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala.) had 20, 12 and 10 digs, respectively for Goucher.
Rhodes led the team again in the second match with 21 assists while Miller distributed the ball around for 13 assists.
The Gophers return home on Tuesday to take on Washington (Md.) in the Decker SRC at 7 p.m. for their 2017 home opener.
